Description

In 1848 John Taylor had West Lodge built, and found the site to be in the middle of a Roman cemetery. In 1849 the British Archaeological Association visited West Lodge and saw graves opened although only a "comparatively small portion of Mr Taylor's ground has been examined nearly two hundred vessels have been found". Taylor's graves probably covered the area now occupied by the houses and gardens west of West Lodge Road and on both sides of the Avenue. By 1849 Taylor had collected around 40 cinerary urns, one acre had been dug and seven acres remained. Taylor presented 170 vessels to the museum with tiles from a tile tomb, including 22 burial groups of which there are coloured drawings by Josiah Parish showing them as found. <1><2><3><4><5><6> The finds included a inscribed tombstone fragment.<7>
