Description

WORMINGFORD FORDHAM ROAD 1. 5214 Rochfords TL 93 SW 2/46 23.6.52 II* 2. C15 and C16 house of 2 builds comprising an L-plan with stair-tower against rear wall, the whole of 2 storeys. Timber framed and plastered with Georgian styling at the west front. Central front door of 6 panels with fluted pilasters and entablature having trigyphs and dentils, window above. Two hornless sash windows each side of doorway on both storeys. Roof hipped and pegtiled behind parapet with red brick chimneystack having 3 concertina shafts. The wing extending east from north end is earliest in date with crownpost roof. The house is unusual in that it has one crosswing from the first due to the previous existence on site of the earlier house which was incorporated early in the C16. The hall rage is of 4 bays on ground plan and bay each end for solar and. service functions, the last at north end. It was always first floored, the common joists having roll-moulded corners and tenons with diminished haunches of reduced width-indicating a building date after circa 1512. The bridging-joists have diminished haunches and soffit spurs. The service bay was roofed as a crosswing and the other 3 bays of hall with a similar heavily timbered side purlin roof, well windbraced. The house was re-styled in the early C18, both inside and out whilst retaining the mediaeval features aforementioned, the C18 interior is of good quality. The parapet was added at this time and the mediaeval eaves removed at the front, good oaken sash-windows equipped with sliding shutters that move both vertically and horizontally in lead lined grooves belong to this restyling. (RCHM 5). Listing NGR: TL9329730373
