Full Description

Moat, partly surrounding house - the latter two storeys, timber-framed and plastered, with tiled roofs, probably built in the C15 with C16 staircase wing on the east side. House was much altered in the C17 and C18. An original wondow has mortices for diamond shaped mullions. The east wing has an original king-post roof-truss. <1> <2> In 1960 the OS reported the house is inhabited but in a rather poor state, showing mainly C18 details. The moat was waterfilled in good condition. <3> Rotchfords is probably to be associated with Roger de `Rocheford' (1285). <4> Incomplete, rectangular moat. <5> Sketch-plan on back of MSRG card. <6> C15 and C16 house, of two builds, comprising L-plan with stair tower against rear wall. House is unusual as it has one cross-wing from the first due to the previous existence on the site of the earlier house which was incorporated early in the C16. 4-bay hall range with solar and service bays at east eand. It was always first floored, commn joists indicating a date after 1512. Service bay was roofed as a cross-wing and the other three bays of the hall with a similarly heavily timbered side purlin roof. The wing extending north from the north end is the earliest in date, with crown-post roof. <7>
