Description

A watching brief was maintained during the construction of an extension to the rear of No.17 North Hill. A contractor's foundation trench led to the uncovering of parts of three Roman pavements together with Roman walls indicated by robber trenches. The contractor's trench was about 1 metre deep and extended down to the surface of the pavements. The pavements were cleaned, planned and photographed and are now preserved under the new foundations. One of the pavements is the black and white mosaic previously uncovered in 1906 (see ECC627).<1> Finds included several sherds of Thetford-type ware.<2>
