Full Description

Boxted Heath is originally shown on the 1777 Chapman & Andre Historic Map, located to the southeast of the settlement of Great Horkesley and where the settlement of Boxted is now. The heath is shown on this map to be an irregular shape, with an area of 338.2ha. The map shows a number of buildings on the edge of the heath, including some listed buildings. These include the Grade II listed C17 Honeysuckle Cottage (LB Number: 1238704), the Grade II listed C18 house Great Blakes (LB Number: 1274105), the Grade II listed C18 house Medlars (LB Number: 1238578), the Grade II listed C17 Box Cottage (LB Number: 1274103), the Grade II listed C17 Holly Cottage (LB Number: 1238548), the Grade II listed c. 1700 Noake's Farm Cottage (LB Number: 1238712), the Grade II listed c. 1600 Thrift Cottages (LB Number: 1238587) and the Grade II listed C18 Rose Cottage (LB Number: 1274029). On this map the heath is shown to be connected to Horkesley Heath on its west side. <1>

Boxted Heath is then shown on the County Series at 1:2500 Scale Epoch 1 Historic Map (1874-1887), which shows the heath to be a lot smaller and a different shape compared to what it used to be. It is now more rectangular and has shrunk to an area of 4.233ha. It has lost most of its land to farmland and the increased urbanisation from Boxted. Due to this change in size it is no longer connected to Horkesley Heath. In modern times the heath seems to disappear completely, as the urbanisation from Boxted takes over the land. <2>
