Description
Magnitude Surveys carried out a fluxgate magnetometer survey of a c.9.5ha. Area of land to the east of Nayland Road, Great Horkesley, in June 2019.<1>
The geophysical data recorded natural variations, which correlated well with the superficial deposits of sand and gravel identified in the site; these produced a relatively noisy magnetic background. Anomalies caused by firing or burning activities were identified along the eastern boundary; these are of undetermined date. Debris anomalies have been recorded, possibly associated with landscaping activities occurring through the late 19th – early 20th centuries east of the Manorhouse Farm. Modern activity was limited to the field edges.
The geophysical survey was followed by a trial-trenched evaluation undertaken by Oxford Archaeology East in 2019 (ECC4356).
