Full Description

In 1962 a fragment of a saucer brooch was obtained by Mr H Calver from workmen engaged in building works behind Luckin-Smith's in Head Street and was subsequently donated to the Colchester and Essex Museum. Tania Dickenson reports on the brooch: about half survives in a very abraded condition. The brooch probably derives from a habitation site because of its abraded condition. The decoration consists of a central flat disc surrounded by a single border ring and two fields of ornament, each with triple border rings on its outer edge. Maximum rim diameter: 39mm; outside rim height: 3. 5mm; thickness of base: 1.5mm. A sixth century date is suggested for this brooch type. <1> Similar to a pair of brooches from an inhumation burial at the fifth to seventh century cemetery at Springfield Lyons. <2>
