Full Description

West of St Runwald's church, a market cross with an open ground floor and a room above replaced the medieval butter market or stall c.1590.<1> About 1590 a new fruit and poultry market with an open ground floor and covered upper storey was built in the middle of the High Street opposite the moot hall. It was known as the market cross by 1605 and the butter market by 1639. By 1803 this had been turned into a guard house, it was demolished in 1808.<1> The cross is shown on Speed's 1610 map.<2>
