Full Description

Watching brief during construction of a new building. Small trenches were dug to the N and S of the town wall. In trenches A, B and C natural sand was reached at c.3.5m depth. Above were numerous ill defined deposits belonging to the rampart behind the wall. They produced exclusively Roman material. The deposits did not seem to include occupation layers. Oyster shells indicated some midden material but there was little rubbish such as bone or pot. Above the Roman material was a substantial layer of post Medieval and later topsoil. The inner face of the Roman wall was fairly well preserved. <1>
