Full Description
Residential redevelopment; the work was watched at three stages. Stage 1 - 5 trial holes dug in 1977. Stage 3 - March 1978, the site for Parsley House (the NE corner of this occupies part of the former site of No 5, Balkerne Gardens excavated in 1965 by BRK Dunnett). Near the centre of Parsley House the contractors trenches cut a N-S Roman street between insulae 17a and 17b. Apart from one E-W wall foundation few tangible features were noted in Insula 17a. The deposits seemed to represent a series of layers of Roman make up material and levelled demolition debris. To the E in insula 17b, the trenches showed a generally similar stratigraphy to that noted in the 1965 excavations. Mortared septaria wall foundations were found in three trenches on the Parsley House site and two on the extension site (Stage 2). The latter also contained a foundation of mortar and pebbles and 2 possible robber trenches. These foundations are almost certainly associated with the period 4 (c.post 160) buildings discovered in 1965. An important find from the late Roman levels in insula 17b was a C4 hoard of over 120 coins found by workmen moving spoil in the NE corner of the extension site. <1>
