Full Description

In 1975 the balcony of the `Hole in the Wall' was demolished and replaced with a new open plan structure to display the remains of the Balkerne Gate to more effect. Small trial hole dug in the flower bed; most of the area examined had been destroyed by digging of a late C19 or C20 pit that may have been the result of archaeological excavation of 1913-17. There were some stratified deposits at the N end of the trial trench consisting of layers of dark soil with fragments of oyster, mortar, tile, septaria and tufa. Accumulation of material behind the blocking wall was dark greyish brown sandy loam containing many small fragments of pink and white mortar and gravel of small stones.
