Full Description

Trench for a gas main around the perimeter of Balkerne Gardens central lawn revealed a thick featureless layer of dark greyish brown sandy loam containing various sherds, C3-C4. The material is probably a topsoil accumulation from the late Roman period onwards. Patch of burnt daub exposed at the bottom of the trench in front of 5 and 6 Balkerne Gardens. <1>
