Full Description

Installation of a gas main along the length of High Street. Foundations were observed - part of the same group noted by Hull in 1927 who thought them Roman. However, excavations in Angel Yard at Nos 133-4 High Street in 1989 indicated that Roman levels were probably deeper than these foundations suggesting the latter are medieval or early post medieval. The foundations at point 4 coincide with the west end of St Runwalds Church and suggest the E wall of the chancel was altered in the C16 or C17. Also found were a succesion of layers of gravel street metalling noted at intervals between Pelhams Lane and The Red Lion. <1>
