Full Description

Construction of a supermarket. Following demolition of the existing buildings the site surface was cleared and sections drawn - these were obtained by the removal of a petrol tank. Later, after the contractors had dug foundation trenches further discoveries were added. Site plan in this source. The site is at the junction of a N-S street with an E-W one. The N-S street overlay a substantial accumulation of material including what appeared to be floors. Metalling in the SW corner of the site was not apparently part of the street and overlay a gully and layers of mortar, both lilkely to have been associated with a building. Other structural remains noted in the contractors trenches include two exposures of opus signinum, a substantial area of red tessellated pavement and part of a daub wall. A group of remains lay in the line of the E-W street and therefore either the street is not in the expected location or the remains have been wrongly plotted, or are sealed by street metalling. The last seems most likely since opus signinum lies also on the line of the N-S street the existence and location of which are quite well established. <1>
