Full Description

Watching brief during the construction of a new sewer. The new pipe was laid along the centre of the street and joined to a sewer laid in 1973 through St Mary's Steps. Roman street metalling was observed at the base of the trench running the whole length of the stretch immediately N of the church. This fits the position of the street as calculated some years before on the basis of the position of the Roman drain opening at St Mary's Steps and the likely alignment of the street. <1>
