Full Description
On the N side of the Roman road as it leaves the Balkerne Gate lie the large grounds of St Mary's Hospital. Several fragmentary buildings are known here and the area is also the most productive of small objects. Up to nearly 20 years ago (ie, 1930's) large pots were continually dug to dispose of rubbish and from these a large number of coins and other small finds were recorded/recovered for the museum. Inhumations were frequently found but cremations also occur. There have been no deliberate excavations. A large depth of made soil - up to 12 ft- is reported. The general impression is that much of the area was used as the general rubbish tip for the town since it contains a jumble of coins and brooches from early to late date. There is pottery up to C4 in date. It is impossible to state the relationship of the burials to the general deposit. Among the finds are fragments of inscriptions including the corner of a military Diploma and part of a tombstone of Purbeck Marble found in 1889. <1>
