Full Description

Hull records, "About 20 ft. e of bastion 5 we secured a complete section of the rampart - the first supervised excavation" (1958, p.54). The lowest part of the rampart was of grey clay extending 42ft back from the face of the Roman wall and which contained a few pieces of tile. The pottery included samian, fragments of coarse grey cooking pots, a coin of Cunobelin, Roman grey pedestal base and mortarium rim. Above the clay is a burnt layer apparently Flavian. Above lies a composite bank of yellow sand intersected by black bands - pottery included decorated samian AD 100-150, colour coated ware, mortarium rims, grey and black wares, fragments of a globular ribbed glass vessel, pieces of imbrices. Date c.mid C2. The drain to the N of the rampart reversed the natural slope for drainage.<1>
