Full Description
"Clear and useful" section cut c.1925 by G Farmer and EJ Rudsdale while still at school through town wall. The foundation projects here 18" on the inside, the trench filled with red clay. Foundation of irregular septaria in white mortar. THe lowest layer of the wall is of septaria capped with tile above is the usual alternation of tile and septaria. The rampart was of no great dimensions and of 4 layers, the lowest of grey clay which contained patches of tile ; a layer of clean sand followed by a bank of dry sandy loam - under it on the sand lay a Hod-Hill type brooch. No pottery was found in this bank. It was made up bt a second bank of loose earth and stones increasing the width to 23ft; on its slope was much broken tile and oyster shell indicating an exposed surface. <1>
