One exposure is noted S of the High Street. I 1938 a long trench for a drain was cut from Queen Street on the S side of the back entrance of the Eastern National Omnibus Company garage; section in source 1. Upon an accumulation of earlier habitations lay road metal of yellow gravel. The total width of the metalling was 25.5ft. The surface of the eastern half had a very blakc layer which was missing from the W half which instead had a heavy make-up of black gravel. On the W was the wall of insula 38, 2ft thick built of septaria laid in yellow mortar. <1>
