Full Description
The second N-S street of Roman Colchester from the west. Three exposures are known which do not line up; the Public Library where very little was seen, St Martin's House where a complete and measured section was obtained, and a third further N. Two of these are Hull's sites 13 and 174. Entry in Laver's diary notes a trench cut in 1920 in Mr Frost's garden 100 yards E of North Hill which revealed a hard gravelled surface (probably a road or passage). In 1922 in extending a trench E from the pavement a road surface of fine road metal was found lying on black soil below which was a heavier bed of metal, both showing a camber. In 1923 when three trees were dug out, 30ft from the N wall of the garden and opposite the W end of the Three Cups stable a bed of hard rammed shingle was revealed on a bed of mortar 10" thick. Below this was a clay and shingle gravel metalling. (Hull site 13 - NGR: TL ). Hull site 174, NGR: TL ). The same N-S street was again located in 1950 when an extension was added to the W of the Telephone Exchange at St Martin's House somewhat further W than expected. Metalling was struck 1ft below the surface - section in source 1. Depth of 6ft, the whole comprising a sequence of road surfaces separated by layers of mud. The street ran between two stone walls 25ft apart (see 12461). The earliest levels of the street show that the line remained unaltered by rebuilding. The first road was laid without clay or loam bedding and without stone or rubble foundation. The first road had no footway - later a footway lay to the W. A large part of the metalling was removed in excavation by hand in a search for coins but none were found, nor anything else except the round horizontal hole where presumably a hollow wooden drainpipe had been laid in the W side of the metalling, following the direction of the street. <1>
