Full Description
Roman street of Colchester walled town which runs from Head Gate to North Gate. This is the only Roman street whose course lies under modern streets. It seems to have had houses of the best class on both sides. The E side has been located by the known E side of the North Gate, which approximately coincides with the modern E kerb opposite Balkerne Lane. The street would have been at least 18ft wide. It has been investigated at two locations (Hull sites 15 and 84). The line of the road continued by a stone wall noted by Wire (1842) whilst workmen were digging on the E side of North Hill near St Peter's Church. The line thus obtained "when projected brings us to a point under the modern street at Head Gate,, just over 10ft from the building line on the E side". In Insula 25 Wire noted that he saw a concrete roadway which he shows running N-S on the site of the Old Dutch Church just W of Head STreet and farther W of the probable Roman street line - "We know no more of this". "Trenches cut along the W side of Head Street from Head Gate to High Street were all clear of the street metalling of Roman days as indeed the plan shows they should be".
