Full Description

"A sketch map in Wire's Album (copy in this source) marks an old wall 3ft below the surface, forming the west boundary of the insula, a concrete floor with powdered brick on the corner of High Street, and other remains mentioned elsewhere". <1> <2> Note in Wire's diary, 25-5-1842; "While the workmen were digging on the E side of North Hill ... when opposite the gates of St Peter's Church they dug into a wall of the same sort of materials as the town walls, which continued running up the hill about 10ft, when it turned in towards the churchyard, and another wall of a similar description, reaching from the lower part of Mr Hall's house down the hill to within about 10ft of the other when it made a similar curve toward the churchyard. Between the two walls where they run towards the churcyard is a Roman road". This is obviously the entrannce to some premises in insula 18. <1> <3> Foundations found 25 April 1842 in North Hill, near the E side, opposite St Peter's church running N-S in alignment with each other for a distance of 150ft or more. <4>
