Full Description
Trench cut in 1920 in Mr Frost's garden, 100 yards E of North Hill, revealed a hard gravelled surface (the N-S street) and 22ft further E a tessellated pavement and foundations running N-S. Observed by PG Laver "Oct 1920 Mr Frost excavated in this garden and several walls and pavements were found, the latter being principally of red tesserae, in some instances mixed with buff, and some of opus signinum". <1> <2> <3> Further information from Mr CA Winkles who has excavated in this insula - his plan suggests Laver's 100 yards is an approximation and it is possible that no.13 as marked on Hul's map should be moved further W?? Remains of a house consisting of tessellated floors at a depth of 5ft extended some 18ft N of the garden wall of Hull's site 22 (see 12463) and may represent the same building. North of this again Winkles found remains of another house, with red tessellated pavements and one of mosaic at a depth of 4ft. The mosaic he removed and reconstructed at Leicester "it is of chequered pattern of a type quite new to Colchester". In the corner of the garden NE of Hull's sites 13 (see above) and 22 (12463), 27ft from the N wall and 32ft from the E was found the concrete bed for a pavement, and the same again at several points in the corner SW of site 13 (pavement described above) at a depth of 3-4ft. <1>
