Full Description

Entry from Wire's Diary, 1855; "Mr Smith, fruiterer, North Hill, informs me that he has discovered a tessellated pavement in the garden in his occupation behind the `Chaise and Pair', North hill". Wheeler and Laver placed the find approximately on the site of the 1922 pavement. <1> - <4> <9> Find from within the garden which occupied much of insulae 10 and 11 in which excavations (never organised) have been made from time to time with the result that there are finds which may have come from either. In Nov 1922 Mr A Frost, then owning the garden, uncovered nearly half of a decorated mosaic pavement probably c.14ft square at a depth of 4-6ft below the surface. Pottery and oyster shells found at the same level, and the pavment was covered by a burnt layer. Remains of walls and a deep cesspool were also found on the site. The work is careful, little worn and without ancient repairs - now in Colchester Museum. <1> <5> - <7> When the pavement was removed the foundations seen to be of septaria, many of large size, pieces of tile and pottery, all resting on a bed of light brown clay which contained much pottery including an amphora handle and part of a samian bowl of f.Drag 30 of late C1 date. Below the clay foundation was a black layer, 1" thick of ashes and charcoal, and below this on the original ground surface was a second brass of Nero. <1> <8>
