Full Description

Investigations in Hollytrees Meadow 1927-8 by PG Laver. On the S side of the area trenches opened located the E-W street (see 12455) - north of it was a gravelled area, probably a yard. c.30ft from the roadway remains of buildings were found "and efforts to trace these resulted in a complex of trenches". These uncovered a foundation 2'3" wide on which a few blocks of septaria still lay in position, running E-W. The N return from the W end was also found. The angle of these two walls was built on an earlier foundation traced 14ft further W. Eastwards the line of the wall was indicated by the edge of a red tessellated pavement 5ft wide E-W, 32ft N-S, laid on an inch of red mortar on a bed of mixed clay and stones. A beaker (illustrated in this source) was found intact at the S end of this pavement where it "may have stood as a foundation offering at the foot of the wall". After the pavement ceased was a gravel yard or area of 15ft, then a dark depression, possibly a pit, which proved barren. In a further attempt to locate houses a trench was dug from the N end of the tessellated pavement towards the drain (12450). After 15ft width of clayey loam containing pottery of AD 100- 200 was a gravel path running N-S, possibly Roman. 30ft from the pavement was the remains of an angle built of septaria and mortar. A further red pavement was located, 14ft N-S, 16ft E-W though the W side was incomplete; the pavement was ill-laid in poor clay, 18" below the surface and in cutting through it "in search of lower layers we found the remains of a brick floor 6" below - the bricks were disturbed but had probably been laid on edge in herringbone fashion".<1>
