Full Description
Site of Roman cemetery, N of main Roman road leading from the Balkerne Gate. Records of finds begin with Wire. H Laver noted remains, especially internments with the corpses wrapped in a sheet of clay. Inhumations have often been found sometimes in numbers but cremations have also been discovered. No excavations or watching briefs have been done however. The great depth of soil, sometimes up to 12 ft, and the large number of coins and other small finds, indicate that much of the area was used as a general rubbish tip for the town, from earliest to latest times, the latter of course predominating. Pottery ranges from Bronze Age to late C4, if not later. "It is quite impossible to state the relationaship of the burials to the general deposit - they may be in it, under it, or separated from it". Finds include fragments of incriptions including the core of a Military Diploma and part of a tombstone of Purbeck marble found in 1889 (in Balkerne Lane). Another fragment of Purbeck marble is recorded. <1> - <12>
