Full Description

18 water leaf capitals found on a watching brief may be from St John's Abbey. They originally came from the base of a vaulted roof of a rich ornate building. An illustration of the Abbey (reprodued in this source) indicates the building was predminantly late C12 or early C13, the same period as the capitals which date to 1180-1220. <1> Originally N boundary wall of the site mainly C19-C20 but incorporated several pieces of worked limestone, mostly column capitals. <2><3>
