Full Description

The bastion is topped by a C18 summer house, in stone, brick and tiles in pseudo-antique fashion. This was thatched but the thatched roof has been burnt (see photo in Hull for thatched roof). When the Medieval bastion was built and the town wall rebuilt the gap between the Medieval work and the Roman rampart was filled with black topsoil. Above this a yellowish band represented the occupation layer after the rebuilding was completed. Roman and Medieval pottery were found in it, also C17 and later pottery including stoneware, and a piece of thin glass from a discarded pane. Mid C17 wares may imply a connnection with the siege of 1648. <1> <2> <3>
