Full Description
An external tower of D-plan with open back, appearing as a round tower from outside, projecting 3.5m. The adjacent portion of town wall is of the same build as the bastion. There is evidence for three rows of put-log holes. The bastion and town wall were found during excavations by Hull in 1931 to have been built on the ruined remains of the Roman town wall. The foundation of the latter had given way and the wall had tilted outwards. The Medieval wall was rebuilt partly on the remaining walls and partly on the yellow sand subsoil where they carried their work 2ft lower than the bottom of the Roman foundations. The gap between the bastion and the Roman rampart was filled with black topsoil. In a layer above the black soil Medieval and post Medieval pottery was found, from the occupation level after the completion of the rebuild. The Medieval pottery was one C14 and one C15 sherd, the former accords with the attribution of the rebuilds to the repairs begun under Richard II and extending over some years.
