Full Description

The spacing of the bastions showed there should be one at this location. This was confirmed by excavation in 1934 when the bastion's foundations were revealed as was the lower part of the town wall (apparently rebuilt here). The bastion foundations rested on a layer of rammed gravel. As the site is opposite the NE postern this may well be a Roman street. The bastion belongs to the repair undertaken by Richard II. Subsequently the bastion leaned outwards and was pulled down to ground level, and the town wall here was seriously damaged also. This was coarsely repaired. The latter events are probably C17. <1> <2> <3>
