Full Description

Excavations by St Mary's Rectory in 1965 showed that the town wall had been free-standing and the ramparts had been added later (usually the reverse is true). Building associated with early pottery found, also 3 mosaic pavements. Distribution of Claudian coins and known burnt deposits of Boudiccan date suggested the pre-Boudiccan settlement was smaller than the later walled town. <1> <2>
