Full Description
During excavations prior to rebuilding on this site after a fire in 1953 it was found that the castle had obliterated the Roman street. Some excavation of the ditch was carried out with disappointing results. Very little pottery was found, and that C13-C14. Layers behind and over the screen fronting the Roman temple precinct were associated with the * of the Norman rampart behind the ditch. 2-3 sherds of possibly Norman pottery were found elsewhere on the site. <1> <2>
