Full Description

Large amounts of broken burnt pottery, melted glass vessels, found during the construction of the cafe. They were stored in stacks, apparently as part of shop stock. Pottery mostly samian. Dating suggests the burning was part of the Boudiccan destruction. A similar discovery was made on the opposite side of the High Street under Curry's. <1> <2> Hull visited the site but no more could be collected. What was found "is probably not one hundredth part of what remains". In 1929 the adjacent site to the W was cleared. Two holes were dug and found remains of daub which had been baked as red and hard as brick. Below the daub was a thin stratum of burnt earth or clay, black in colour and lying on sand showing signs of burning. Presumably the dark layer was the floor of the building. Most of the pottery is samian. Colour coated wares were also found, as were fine glass wares. It seems that samian was piled on the floor or a lower shelf with the glass on the shelf above. The roof of the shop must have been wood or thatch as no tiles were found. Other finds included a jar, a number of short perforated bone cylinders, held to have been used as hinges. Later remains were few and little is known of this period, though apparently the remains of the shop were simply levelled for next use of the site. <3>
