Full Description

During the archaeological excavation of 1973-4 on the site of the Cups Hotel on the High Street, aseries of C11 or possibly C10, pits excavated, but no post- Roman structures earlier than the C13 on the frontage. Norman stone house found back from the frontage . <1> <2> Saxo-Norman pottery from the pit and Norman robber trench included Thetford type ware, shelly and sandy wares. Saxon finds included a dozen sherds of grass-tempered pottery, mostly from residual contexts. No clear traces of Anglo-Saxon structures were found. Mots of the sherds were body sherds and consequently difficult to date, but are probably sixth to seventh century one sherd was thin-walled and well-burnished inside and out .Two sherds from the same pit have pear shaped stamps and horizontal and diagonal lines. Similar stamps occur on a pot from London attributed with a middle Saxon date. <3>
