Full Description

Norman stone house demolished in 1886 to the rear of Jacklin's Cafe. <1> A ground plan, some elevations, and a series of photographs were produced, at the instigation of JH Round who, with the assistance of others, carried out some rudimentary excavation, establishing that the "edifice was more extensive than had hitherto been suspected". The results of the work and Round's conclusions were set out in a newspaper article (see source 3). Source 2 gives reconstructed isometric plan showing the known features. The ground plan is reliable, * * * are only known from photographs. The building comprised a first floor hall with barrel vaulted basement sunk partially beloiw ground level, and a narrow E-W rrom to the south. The basement had 4, probably 5, * windows, 4 doorways, (only 3 apparently original); and 7 round headed recesses. The precise nature of the 2 apertures in the N wall of the basement is obscure. The first floor of the hall contained at least 3 round-headed openings - two probably doorways, the other a window. The narrow E-W room was not a passage since its E wall contained a tall round-headed window rather than a doorway. The walls shown on the plan adjoining the basement were presumably found in the excavations. Round thought that the building was part of a group of tenements that, according to Morant, were the remains of an old inn, known in old writings as The Bershold. Unfortunately the identification of this building with Morants is unconfirmed. If Morant's source for the name is the Oath Book, he misquotes the name - should be `Bergholtes'. Round compounded the error, naming it * suggesting the building was * stronghold of the borough. It is more plausible that the building was a private house associated with East or West Bergholt. <2> - <8>
