Full Description

Roman town house excavated by Josiah Parish, 1865. Mosaic pavements were found. <1> The first part of the investigation of this house was comparatively well done in 1865 by Parish. The walls had mostly been robbed, even of the footings. Some of the latter remained, of rubble with tile bonded into the walls n random rubble courses. The floors were mostly concrete but some tessellated pavements were found and removed to Colchester Museum. Remains of an earlier building were found under one room. The corner of an adjacent building was probably part of the same house. Finds included: a `bronze box or vessel'; a complete urn, possibly a foundation offering; a stylus; a horse skeleton (probably post-Roman); a few pieces of glass and a small fragment of a coin a piece of colour-coated beaker; bone pins and needles; an iron knife; a knife handle, of bone decorated. A red tessellated pavement found 20 yards E of Parish's discovery was probably part of the same house. in 1910 the Technical College was built over the site, without archaeological records being made, although some finds went to the Museum. An entry on the OS 1:500 map in the museum (presumably by the Borough Engineer) comprises Parish's plans with the addition of a few fragmentary walls, showing that the building was very extensive, over 60 yards E-W and over 30 yards N-S. Other pavements, evidently belonging to this building were mentioned by SH Pollexfen (1864). A workman told Hull that when the Technical College was built great masses of masonry were dynamited, and included column bosses. Three parts of a column or columns of Purbeck marble (or similar) were given to the museum one showing moulding of a base or capital; also a fragment of porphry and fragments of painted wall plaster. Coins from the site in the museum, one of Constantine II, one of Gratian and 7 illegible from the later empire. Other finds included a brooch, small eyelets and pottery (including samian) including whole vessels probably foundation offering pots. <2> - <9> This source gives NGR as TL 99262533. <10>
