Full Description

Four early Medieval lime pits and a complex of lime kilns (C13-C14). Finds in Colchester Museum. <1> - <4> Four Early Medieval lime kilns were found, one on Site J (only one to be fully excavated) and three on the E side of Lion Walk (1 on site S, 2 on Site R). These early kilns consisted of large * pits, probably with daub superstructure. The one on Site J dated to c.1150-1250 from the pottery it contained and that it cut c.C12 robber trenches and was itself cut by a ?C13 pit. Five phases were detected within the excavated kiln. A complex of lime kilns was found on Site L extending into Site C. Theses were of a later, smaller, but fcar more efficient type. Associated pottery indicated a C14-C16 date. The kilns sealed 3 pits and a robber trench, all probably early Medieval. The kilns were substantially earlier than the almshouses (Building 31, see ) which sealed them. There were at least 9 kilns, not all used at the same time. These later kilns were made of broken tile set in daub although there was some reused Roman tile. the Colchester kilns are unusual in that they oyster shells rather than chalk to make lime. <5>
