Full Description

C12 and later. West tower C14. N aisle C15. Roman brick in the fabric.<1><2> the nave S wall was refaced in 1855, prior to which it contained herringbone work in Roman brick. East wall of chancel shows evidence for disruption in the Roman brick courses.<3> Bones found with Roman pottery.<4>

Site Assessment = Now a natural history museum. All Saints is in the Roman forum-basilica complex, probably over the E range. 'It would be surprising if the foundation at least, did not make use of the underlying Roman walls (as with St Nicholas's)'. No current threats but should the opportunity arise there should be detailed examination of the fabric and excavation to assess possible reuse of the Roman structure.<3>
