Full Description

Stood in the middle of the High Street and was demolished in 1875. Extant in 1296 (according to Morant) and repaired 1760 (according to Cromwell). <1> - <5> Late Anglo-Saxon origin according to Rodwell (see 12256). In the late medieval period the church was extended by the addition of a N chancel-aisle and vestry, and a range of shops became attached to its east end. Known as `Middle Row'. These most probably represented replacements of market stalls. They were demolished a few years before the church (1878). The graveyard was detached (see ). After demolition materials were dispersed to several locations; the C15 N arcade was re-erected at St Allbrights, Stanway (see ). <6>

Site Assessment = Rodwell suggests the church was a later Anglo-Saxon addition to an already existing market place. <6> Crummy suggests the opposite, that the position of the church can be explained by street wideingin to form a market place around it. <7>
