Full Description

Stood in the middle of the High Street and was demolished 1878. Extant in 1296 (source 2 - Morant) and repaired 1760 after being ruinous for over 100 years (source 3 - Cromwell). <1> - <5> The church formerly occupied an island in the middle of the High Street. It is known from old photographs and from Bucklers description (including a plan). The church comprised a rectangular nave with opposing doorways (and possibly a west door also) and a square chancel. The proportions, thickness of the walls, and dedication suggest a later Anglo-Saxon foundation. It is unlikely that such a dedictaion would have been made after the Norman conquest (the St Runwald was probably the child saint of C8). After demolition the materials were dispersed to several locations. The graveyard was at some distance from the church (see ), suggesting that the area around the church was heavily built up when it was constructed. The walls of the church were coursed flint rubble, where not rebuilt in C18 brick. <6> - <9> From the position of St Runwalds in the town centre and now on the frontage of the market Crummy suggests it was the earliest of the town's churches. It lay at the junction of two Roman streets. <10>

Site Assessment = Rodwell suggests the church is a fairly late intrusion to an already existing market place. in all probability the building's foundations survive, in part at least. Any future oppotunity should be taken to examine the relationship of the church to the underlying deposits. <6> Crummy suggests the position of the church is explicable by street widening to forma market place around it. <10>
