Full Description
In 1891 Mr H Goodyear made a plan of massive walls revealed when cutting trenches for drains in Maidenburgh Street. It is not certain how much of the plan is conjecture. Hull thought that the remains could be of an amphitheatre or theatre. St Helen's Chapel, nearby, has a wall the base of which is Roman (see 12252). <1> <2> <3> These walls were uncovered again in 1981 and 1984, in advance of development. The plan, state and massive character leaves no interpretation other than a Roman theatre. A well preserved mortar floor, the base of a passage, was also found. <4>
Site Assessment = The passage floors and curved walls found in 1981 are on display in the ground floor of one of the new houses and differently coloured bricks trace the outline of the outer wall in the new road surface. <4><5>
