Full Description

Anglo-Saxon church with C19 work. <1> <2> <4> The church was restored in the second half of the C19 when the E vestry, N chapel and N aisle were added. In the W wall of the S aisle is a C17 or C18 window (splayed rear arch C15). At the top of the tower are a few courses of C18 brick, a carved cornice and pyramidal roof. Features and fittings include: one bell of 1633; monument to William Gilberd (1603); C17 floor slabs; plate includes pewter flagon of c.1700. <3> Church restored in 1886. There is an interesting monument to William Gilberd (1544-1603) famous for his researches into electricity. <5> Drastic restoration in C19. <6>

Site Assessment = Graveyard has been partly cleared and is maintained in excessively tidy condition as a public building. <6>
