Full Description

"The Museum undertook, with kind permission of the Authorities of the Royal Eastern Counties Institute, to cut a section of the rampart of the Roman town in the garden of East Hill House. The position is on the east wall of the town near the SE angle. The object was to obtain evidence of date. The wall was found to have slipped and tilted outwards. The rampart appears to have been comparatively small, and unfortunately, produced but little of any use for dating. More work must be done here also. The work here was also done almost entirely by our members. It was very heavy, for the depth was 13 feet". <2> in <1> The section cut in 1948 found that the wall had slipped some 6.5 ft eastwards and outwards, tilting over at the same time. A large pit had been dug behind (possible C17 - see ). The rampart was excavated and Antonine pottery was found in it. A shallow midden pit was found in the rampart body. C1 and C2 pottery was found. <3>

A magnetometer and topographic survey was carried out in the grounds of East Hill House. A negative linear anomoly running N-S is possibly a street, revetment, or terrace.<4>
