Monument record MCC7715 - Cropmarks near-Stanway-Iron Latch Lane
Summary
A possible ring ditch, c.24m in diameter (centred on TL 95627 25589), and other possible linear cropmarks have been recorded by aerial photography ot the east of Iron Latch Lane (and west of Chitts Hill), across an area c.9.5ha. in size.

Full Description
Possible cropmarks, indicative of below-ground archaeological remains, recorded by aerial photography. <1> - <10>
These were investigated by trial-trenched evaluation in 2017 (ECC3952) and targetted excavation in 2019 (ECC4366). No (surviving) evidence of the ring ditch was defined although four pits were, with radiocarbon dating on bone from one providing a late Iron Age date and charcoal from another producing a mid to late Saxon date (see MCC10387). The majority of the potential features identified as cropmarks, and also as anomalies by geophysical survey (ECC3889), were shown to be either later post-medieval to modern ditches, natural features (and/or otherwise not existing as below-ground remains).<13><14><15>
