Full Description

Roman tile kilns excavated by the CAG in 1969-70 which uncovered the remains of two tile kilns of rectangular updraught type. They are dated by the pottery to the end of the C1 AD.<1>

The site lies on the north bank of the River Colne directly opposite the Sheepen site to the south of the river. Two kilns built one inside the other were found during ploughing. The outer walls of kiln 1 enclosed a chamber of c.4m square. Inside and against the outer walls were built a second kiln with walls of unfired clay blocks and a firing chamber 3m square. There were seven cross walls in the combustion chamber, mainly of tegulae, roughly broken to size by removing the flanges. The stoke hole projected southwards down hill; it was not excavated to any extent but was found to contain a thick deposit of black wood ash containing pottery and tile fragments. There is no evidence from the published account of any indication that it was possible to identify the products of either kiln.<2><3><4>

AP of the site in Essex SMR.<5>

The kilns are located within an area of (undated) cropmarks (MCC8630), which are possibly part of the same complex.
