Full Description
Suspected Roman road or courtyard or part of the foundation of the old Peldon Hall sacked in 1381. Hall of uncertain date believed to be adjacent to an earlier building. <1> <2> Finds reported by Mr Coan discovered while digging in the floor of the old barn at Peldon Hall. Locals report that the remains of Old Peldon Hall are to the rear of the present Hall-barn complex. So it is "perfectly possible that this may not be a road, but the remains of a cobbled yard or even part of the foundations of the Old Peldon Hall". Little seems to be known about the layout of the old hall. <3> Peldon Hall is an early C14 hall house, extensively altered in the late C16 and late C18. Timber framed and plastered. Internally the original service wing remains with exposed frame at the first floor. Part of the C14 hall roof with arch braced collar purlin is also in situ. To the north-east of the hall is a mid C14 aisled 5 bay barn, timber framed and weatherboarded with a crownpost roof with arch braced tie beams. <4> Other refs. <5> <6>
Site Assessment = Courtyard-foundation is still beneath the barn; so far as is known there is no imminent threat to the site. <1>
