Full Description

Raised bank and ditch, aligned N to S traced by Laver from the corner of Abberton House garden to Abberton Church (on the north side of the churchyard MCC10044), for c.95m in length, and thought by him to be the remains of a Roman road.<1>

The earthwork appears to have been identified as a section of dyke (in line with Berechurch Dyke) by Hawkes & Crummy, referred to as Abberton Dyke, although they state it is 760m long.<2> However, the north end of the (water-filled) ditch turns east, apparently forming the corner of a moated/ditched enclosure, presumably around Abberton Hall (MCC7332) and part of a church/hall complex with the church located on the SW corner of the enclosure.
