Full Description

Investigations in Hollytrees Meadow 1927-9 by PG Laver. Wall behind opening 9 in the drain (12450) containing tiled arch. The wall proved to be in a bad state of preservation. It ran not quite parallel to the drain and was continued as a very ruinous rubble core 3ft thick for 33ft to the S. 10ft further S this was found to be a slight remnant of a stone wall 14ft wide and not quite in the same line. The small arched culvert at the N end is at a level a little above the opening into the drain with which it probably connected by a wooden conduit, for which there is no trace left. Trench cut Westward for 90ft; at 42.5ft and 65ft from the W face of the culvert were traces of light walls of septaria. The remains were only about 1ft thick and very fragmentary. At 72ft there was a patch of loose septaria. It is possible that this represented the W wall of the building. Nothing else was found in the trench except some battered and worn fragments of pottery. Plan showing the position of the trench in this source. <1>
