Full Description
A red pavement in the yard of the public house formerly known as the `Bishop Blaize' - there is difficulty in locating this. Wheeler and Laver place it on the crossroads of INsulae 3, 4, 11 and 12 slightly inside insula 3 and 4 - ie, where the Stockwell Arms now stands (c.TL 99592542). Laver in TEAS, v.10, p.89 states it was at the "NE corner of Angel Lane or West Stockwell Street, and there is in fact another NE corner to this street, at the end of the curved part where the Locomotive Inn once stood". Wire's Diary 10.9.1843 says Bishop Blaize in Duck Lane (now Northgate Street) was later renamed the `Locomotive' (later renamed Victory and closed c.1919) "there seems to be no doubt now that the `Bishop Blaize' stood at the extreme NE corner of West Stockwell Street and Northgate Street. <1><2> Other refs. <3> <4>
