Full Description
Excavations (in 1984) in the field where La Tene III burial is thought to have been found. Iron Age ditch revealed, late Iron Age pottery recovered. <1> APs shows a sub-circular cropmark containing a pit mark of similar size to the 1849 excavation; linear ditches also showed as a cropmark. These cropmarks were examined in 1977-80. The sub-circular cropmark revealed mainly natural subsoil. In a corner of the trial square the fill of a ditch was found. This terminates near the area of the circular cropmark which may represent water draining down the ditch. The ditch was followed for 18m NW from the possible terminus near the circular mark. 50 Late Iron Age sherds were found, mostly near plough level, indicating that the ditch had silted up by the early C1 (AD?). Cropmarks indicated continuation of the ditch NW. At one point along the ditch an area of stones was seen. Trenches cut at right angles uncovered another ditch containing similar pottery. <2> In a further season, the second ditch was shown not to be parallel to the first and two further ditches were found. The area of stones (and a second layer) were found to be natural. There was no defined pattern or apparent function to the ditches. Pottery indicates a date range of 40BC to 60 AD. It seems unlikely they were all in use at the same time. It seems likely the ditches marked boundaries or were for drainage. The discovery of 400+ potsherds suggests occupation was nearby. It was not possible to trace the 1849 burial. This source describes the attempt to reconstruct one field boundary pattern and possible location of the burial at the time of the railway's construction. (NB see 9202 for possible cropmark of the vault!). <3> AP <4>
